Phlebotomy Technician

Certificate Program

This comprehensive program, certified by the National Healthcare Association (NHA), trains students in a range of blood collection techniques with a strong emphasis on safety, accuracy, and professional standards. Instruction is delivered through a combination of in-person classes, lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions, and clinical experience. Students will be eligible to take the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam at the conclusion of the course.

Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

What You Will Learn

Measurable Performance Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Communicate and collaborate effectively with instructors, peers, and clinical site employees.
  2. Demonstrate emotional stability to allow professional interaction with patients under stressful or demanding conditions.
  3. Understand and apply standard precautions and the blood-born pathogen standard.
  4. Demonstrate accountability in the phlebotomist role.
  5. Perform phlebotomy procedures in a safe and therapeutic manner.
  6. Demonstrate CPR at the heart saver level.
  7. Apply basic principles of infection control including prevention of spreading or contracting blood borne illnesses.
  8. Identify the major body systems.
  9. Identify major blood vessels and blood vessels used in venipuncture.
  10. Identify, locate and draw blood from appropriate blood vessels.
  11. Identify common lab tests and normal values.
  12. Identify and select proper specimen containers i.e. blood tubes for specific blood tests.
  13. Identify and demonstrate proper handling of specimens in the preanalytical phase.
  14. Understand and identify procedures in routine and STAT lab testing.
  15. Understand and apply HIPA regulations.
  16. Obtain 10 successful human venipunctures from the lab setting, prior to clinical.
  17. Obtain 5 – 7 capillary punctures (finger sticks) in the lab setting, prior to clinical.
  18. Obtain 100 successful human venipunctures from the lab and clinical settings.
  19. Demonstrate appropriate use of medical abbreviations.
  20. Demonstrate proper vessel selection for venipuncture in the lab and clinical setting.
  21. Demonstrate proper venipuncture technique in the lab and clinical setting.
  22. Demonstrate proper tube selection for specific blood tests in the lab and clinical setting.
  23. Demonstrate proper specimen handling in the lab and clinical setting.
  24. Demonstrate ability to identify patients accurately in the lab and clinical setting.
  25. Pass exams and quizzes at 80% or above.
  26. Students will pass lab and clinical at the satisfactory level.

Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
