Patient Care Technician
Certificate Program
Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital members of the healthcare team, providing direct patient care and support in clinical settings. This program prepares students with the fundamental knowledge and hands-on skills needed to assist patients in hospital environments under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) or other licensed medical staff.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the Patient Care Technician certification exam offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA).
Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Perform patient care technician clinical skills.
- Properly identify patient and provide safe and effective patient care.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills in prioritizing patient care.
- Demonstrate competency in basic nursing care procedures (CNA).
- Demonstrate competency in phlebotomy procedures (PHLEB).
- Demonstrate competency in performing EKG patient preparation and testing.
- Perform fasting and non-fasting blood glucose via glucometer – capillary puncture.
- Perform removal of indwelling urinary catheter.
- Perform urine specimen collection via indwelling catheter.
- Perform IV catheter removal.
- Perform accurate vital signs assessments.
- Perform pulse oximetry.
- Perform post-catheter bladder scanning.
- Assist the nurse with patient care.
- Perform and record POCT blood glucose and urine testing.
- Perform and review with nurse nasal culture swab.
- Perform and review with nurse throat culture swab.
- Measure the weight of an ambulatory patient.
- Demonstrate understanding of care measures for the hospital patient including those with IVs, NG tubes and feeding tubes.
- Apply analytical skills as required for the patient care technician in a variety of health care settings.
- Determine previous results or baseline vital signs prior to performing procedures.
- Prepare laboratory test results for the nurse.
- Document measurements in the medical record.
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal test within the scope of the patient care technician and under the supervision of the nurse.
- Apply microbiology/infection control as required in a variety of health care settings.
- Discuss infection control measures applicable to direct patient care in a variety of health care settings.
- Discuss quality control issues related to specimen collection and handling.
- Exhibit sensitivity to patient rights and feelings in receiving care.
- Explain the rationale for performance of a procedure to the patient.
- Perform POCT testing within the scope of practice for the patient care technician.
- Use effective communication as required in a variety of health care settings
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills in performing patient assessment and care.
- Use language/verbal skills that enable patients’ understanding.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to patient rights and feelings in patient care procedures.
- Explain the rationale for performance of a procedure to the patient.
- Demonstrate awareness of patients’ concerns regarding their perceptions related to the procedure being performed.
- Prepare a patient for procedures and/or treatment.
- Record patient care.
- Record patient education.
- Perform EKG testing.
- Perform venipuncture.
- Perform capillary puncture.
- Apply legal guidelines as required in a variety of health care settings
- Practice within the standard of care for a patient care technician.
- Write an incident report.

Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
