Clinical Medical Assistant with Phlebotomy
Certificate Program
This comprehensive program provides training to equip students with the skills to assist healthcare providers by preparing patients for exams and treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, and specialized phlebotomy techniques. Instruction is delivered through a mix of in-person classes, online lectures, laboratory practice, and clinical experiences.
Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take both the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national exam and the Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam.
Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Explain the medical assistant's role as a member of the health care team.
- Discuss the components of effective communication including the need to adapt one’s communication to meet the patient’s needs.
- Describe the legal aspects of medical assisting including the HIPPA, confidentiality, and OSHA guidelines.
- Discuss the need for critical thinking for a medical assistant.
- Perform the basic clerical functions of an entry level medical assistant.
- Project a professional image and adhere to ethical principles.
- Demonstrate appropriate techniques for assisting with examinations, procedures and treatments.
- Perform an EKG appropriately.
- Demonstrate how to prepare and administer medications and immunizations.
- Demonstrate CPR for an adult, child and infant victim according to the American Heart Association guidelines.
- Discuss the role of electronic health records in improving patient care.
- Demonstrate successful venipuncture and capillary sticks.
- Operate health data elements.
- Identify the content of a health record.
- Discuss regulatory issues such as confidentiality, security and privacy.
- Explain the health information technology regulations enacted under HIPAA and HITECH legislation.
- Demonstrate and apply standard precautions and the blood-born pathogen standard.
- Demonstrate accountability in the phlebotomist role.
- Perform phlebotomy procedures in a safe and therapeutic manner.
- Apply basic principles of infection control including prevention of spreading or contracting blood borne illnesses.
- Identify the major body systems.
- Identify major blood vessels and blood vessels used in venipuncture.
- Identify, locate and draw blood from appropriate blood vessels.
- Identify common lab tests and normal values.
- Identify and select proper specimen containers i.e. blood tubes for specific blood tests.
- Identify and demonstrate proper handling of specimens in the preanalytical phase.
- Identify procedures in routine and STAT lab testing.
- Obtain 10 capillary punctures (finger sticks) in the lab setting, prior to clinical.
- Obtain 30 successful human venipunctures from the lab and clinical settings.
- Collaborate effectively with members of the health care team.
- Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills with health care professionals.
Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
