Medical Coding Specialist
Certificate Program
This course prepares students to perform the essential duties of an outpatient medical coder and to successfully pass the national certification exam. The curriculum introduces key topics including anatomy and terminology, physiology, pharmacology, ICD, CPT, HCPCS coding systems, and major medical insurance programs nationwide. Upon completing the course, students will be eligible to take the Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P) exam and will receive a one-year student membership to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Possess in-depth knowledge of ICD10-CM, HCPCS and CPT Coding.
- Identify coding guidelines, basic conventions and modifiers.
- Identify basic laws involving medical records and confidentiality.
- Manage a medical chart and its contents.
- Discuss and explain the life cycle of an insurance claim form.
- Locate and maintain a medical chart and its components.
- Identify various types of insurances and common terminology associated with them.
- Identify and review claim rejections or delays.
Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
