Certificate Program
This program was developed with industry experts in Delaware utilizing the nationally recognized NCCER curriculum. Through a combination of classroom instruction, simulator training, and hands-on equipment operation, students learn to perform as skilled craftsmen and operate heavy machinery on the jobsite.

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of this course students will be prepared to:
- Identify key safety requirements relative to OSHA standards.
- Determine the proper Personal Protective Equipment for safety applications.
- ATSSA Flagger Certification.
- Learn and apply the standard skillset of a good flagger.
- Examine the hazards associated with working in or around excavation sites.
- Convert units of length, weight, volume, and temperature between the imperial and metric systems of measurement.
- Calculate area and volume of angles and geometric shapes.
- Demonstrate the proper way to use various hand tools.
- Demonstrate the proper way to use various types of power tools, including drills, impact wrenches, power saws, and grinders.
- Interpret residential and commercial architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing construction documents.
- Explain how to properly start, operate, and shut down a variety of heavy equipment.
- Identify and explain earthmoving terms and methods.
- Determine the amounts of soil and other material to be removed from or added to a job-site excavation, focusing on volume and weight calculations.
- Identify types of stakes and explain markings on grade and benchmark stakes.
- Identify the types of equipment used in finish grading.
- Explain methods used to stabilize soils and control soil erosion.
- Describe finish grading methods used on parking lots, sidewalks, and curbs.
- Interpret layout and marking methods to determine grading requirements and operations.
- Describe the various types and characteristics of soils.
- Explain how soil characteristics affect machine performance.
- Identify and describe the components, controls, and attachments on a typical backhoe.
- Perform basic backhoe maneuvers, including forward and backward movement, turning, and operating the front loader bucket.
- Perform basic maneuvers with a dozer, including moving forward and backwards, turning the blade up, and driving straight.
- Perform basic maneuvers with a hydraulic excavator, including moving forward and backwards, making a pivot turn, and making a spot turn.
- Execute basic maneuvers with a skid steer, including, grading, removing stumps or boulders, steering, changing attachments, loading, and maneuvering on slope.
- Describe the heavy equipment startup, arm-up, operating, and shutdown procedures.
- Execute basic maneuvers with a loader, including proper movements and curling the bucket.
