Heavy Equipment Operator

Certificate Program

This program was developed with industry experts in Delaware utilizing the nationally recognized NCCER curriculum. Through a combination of classroom instruction, simulator training, and hands-on equipment operation, students learn to perform as skilled craftsmen and operate heavy machinery on the jobsite.
Training will include:

  • OSHA-10 Construction Safety
  • Safe Forklift Operator Certificate
  • ATSSA National Flagger Certification
  • Construction Drawings
  • Site and Land Surveying
  • Earth Moving & Excavation
  • Machinery Operations
  • Basic Equipment Maintenance

    • loaders

What You Will Learn

Measurable Performance Objectives

Upon completion of this course students will be prepared to:

  1. Identify key safety requirements relative to OSHA standards.
  2. Determine the proper Personal Protective Equipment for safety applications.
  3. ATSSA Flagger Certification.
  4. Learn and apply the standard skillset of a good flagger.
  5. Examine the hazards associated with working in or around excavation sites.
  6. Convert units of length, weight, volume, and temperature between the imperial and metric systems of measurement.
  7. Calculate area and volume of angles and geometric shapes.
  8. Demonstrate the proper way to use various hand tools.
  9. Demonstrate the proper way to use various types of power tools, including drills, impact wrenches, power saws, and grinders.
  10. Interpret residential and commercial architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing construction documents.
  11. Explain how to properly start, operate, and shut down a variety of heavy equipment.
  12. Identify and explain earthmoving terms and methods.
  13. Determine the amounts of soil and other material to be removed from or added to a job-site excavation, focusing on volume and weight calculations.
  14. Identify types of stakes and explain markings on grade and benchmark stakes.
  15. Identify the types of equipment used in finish grading.
  16. Explain methods used to stabilize soils and control soil erosion.
  17. Describe finish grading methods used on parking lots, sidewalks, and curbs.
  18. Interpret layout and marking methods to determine grading requirements and operations.
  19. Describe the various types and characteristics of soils.
  20. Explain how soil characteristics affect machine performance.
  21. Identify and describe the components, controls, and attachments on a typical backhoe.
  22. Perform basic backhoe maneuvers, including forward and backward movement, turning, and operating the front loader bucket.
  23. Perform basic maneuvers with a dozer, including moving forward and backwards, turning the blade up, and driving straight.
  24. Perform basic maneuvers with a hydraulic excavator, including moving forward and backwards, making a pivot turn, and making a spot turn.
  25. Execute basic maneuvers with a skid steer, including, grading, removing stumps or boulders, steering, changing attachments, loading, and maneuvering on slope.
  26. Describe the heavy equipment startup, arm-up, operating, and shutdown procedures.
  27. Execute basic maneuvers with a loader, including proper movements and curling the bucket.
