EKG Technician

Certificate Program

This program trains students in the skills required to perform 3-lead, 5-lead, and 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs). Students will learn how to accurately interpret cardiac rhythms, identify irregularities, and troubleshoot common artifacts in EKG readings. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to sit for a national certification exam to become a Certified EKG Technician.

A clinical internship may be included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

What You Will Learn

Measurable Performance Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Define related terminology.
  2. Follow the circulation of blood through the heart starting at the vena cavae.
  3. Explain the electrical conduction system of the heart.
  4. Identify the various positive and negative deflections and describe what it represents on the EKG tracing.
  5. Describe the importance of the standardization of the EKG.
  6. Identify the 12 leads of an EKG and explain the area of the heart that each lead represents.
  7. Identify and explain the possible artifacts.
  8. Name and describe the purposes of various diagnostic tests.
  9. Identify five arrhythmias and explain the cause of each.
  10. Mount an EKG tracing.

Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
