Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Basic Certification Course
Certificate Program
The EMT-Basic Certification Course trains students to be the first responders in the emergency medical system. You will learn fundamental emergency skills to evaluate patients and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma situations effectively. This program includes 100 hours of online instruction combined with 80 hours of hands-on classroom training. The course is approved by both the Delaware Office of Emergency Medical Services and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information. Participants are required to schedule an ambulance ride-along outside of regular class hours.

What You Will Learn
Measurable Performance Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Understand foundational EMS principles Learn the roles and responsibilities of an EMT, including scene safety, maintaining personal protection, and understanding legal and ethical implications, such as duty to act, consent, and patient confidentiality.
- Master patient assessment skills for respiratory, cardiac, and trauma cases Develop proficiency in conducting primary and secondary assessments to evaluate respiratory and cardiac conditions, quickly recognize life-threatening injuries, and take immediate action to stabilize patients.
- Demonstrate proper airway management and ventilation techniques Practice using airway adjuncts, bag-valve masks, and other devices to maintain open airways, provide effective ventilation, and support patients with compromised breathing.
- Apply critical-thinking skills to make quick, effective emergency decisions Engage in scenario-based training that emphasizes critical thinking, allowing students to develop the ability to rapidly evaluate situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Identify and treat a range of medical conditions, including shock, seizures, and diabetes Learn to recognize and treat various medical emergencies, with a focus on identifying symptoms of shock, managing seizures, and providing appropriate care for diabetic emergencies.
- Safely manage trauma cases, focusing on bleeding control and immobilization Understand the principles of trauma care, including controlling bleeding through direct pressure, tourniquets, and bandaging, and properly using immobilization techniques for spinal and limb injuries.
- Develop skills for pediatric and geriatric patient care Adapt assessment and treatment strategies to address the unique needs of pediatric and geriatric patients, considering age-specific anatomical, physiological, and emotional differences.
- Perform emergency childbirth procedures Gain competence in handling field childbirth scenarios, including recognizing the stages of labor, assisting in delivery, and managing post-delivery care for both mother and newborn.
- Communicate effectively with patients and emergency responders Learn effective communication skills to relay critical information, provide reassurance to patients, and coordinate with other responders during emergencies.
- Uphold ethical standards and patient confidentiality in all scenarios Emphasize the importance of maintaining professionalism, respecting patient rights, and adhering to ethical standards, including confidentiality, non-discrimination, and compassionate care.
Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
