Hemodialysis Technician
Certificate Program
This program is designed for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of patient care fundamentals, renal anatomy and physiology, dialysis treatment procedures, water treatment systems, dialyzer reprocessing, and relevant medical ethics and laws. The program also covers the impact of nutrition and medications on dialysis patients and introduces students to the clinical environment and the equipment used in renal care.
Instruction includes 200 hours of classroom learning, with a potential opportunity for a clinical internship at a local healthcare facility (internship eligibility required). A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary to enroll. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) exam, offered by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC).
A clinical internship may be included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with instructors, peers, and clinical site employees.
- Demonstrate emotional stability to allow professional interaction with patients under stressful or demanding conditions.
- Demonstrate and apply standard precautions and the blood-born pathogen standard.
- Demonstrate accountability in the dialysis technician role.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of medical abbreviations.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of medical terminology.
- Perform dialysis procedures in a safe and therapeutic manner.
- Demonstrate CPR at the health care provider level.
- Apply basic principles of infection control including prevention of spreading or contracting blood borne illnesses.
- Identify the major body systems (as they pertain to kidney structure, vascular systems, and functions).
- Evaluate appropriate patient pre and post treatment.
- Initiate treatment for patient per orders.
- Demonstrate proper cannulation techniques.
- Collect lab samples and monitor treatment.
- Document observations and data during and after patient treatment.
- Operate dialysis machine according to standards of disinfection, calibration, set up for treatment, and safety checks.
- Understand the components of water treatment systems.
- Maintain and evaluate water treatment systems.
- Maintain a clean and safe patient environment.
- Demonstrate appropriate precautions for personal protection and biohazard waste.
- Communicate clear concise discharge instructions for patients.
- Identify and apply HIPAA regulations.
- Demonstrate proper specimen handling in the lab and clinical setting.
- Demonstrate ability to identify patients accurately in the lab and clinical setting.
Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
