Medical Administrative Assistant

Certificate Program

This program provides comprehensive training in the administrative functions of a medical office. Students will develop skills in patient intake, appointment scheduling, medical office procedures, and non-clinical support tasks. Instruction is delivered through a combination of in-person classes and online lectures.

Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam.

Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Apply proper use of Medical Terminology.
  2. Justify the benefits of Electronic Health Record technologies.
  3. Operate health data elements.
  4. Perform applicable Practice Management and EHR functions.
  5. Discuss the contents of a health record.
  6. Demonstrate how to manage health information and office communication.
  7. Differentiate between EHR and Practice Management applications.
  8. Discuss regulatory issues such as confidentiality, security, and privacy.
  9. Explain the various health information technology regulations enacted under HIPAA and HITECH legislations.
  10. Collaborate effectively with members of the health care team.
  11. Demonstrate accountability inherent in the Medical Administrative Assistant role.
  12. Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills with health care professionals.

Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
