Central Service Technician (Sterile Processing)
Certificate Program
This program is designed for individuals currently working in or seeking employment in central service departments. Central Service Technicians play a vital role in healthcare by managing the procurement, decontamination, cleaning, processing, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical supplies essential for patient care, particularly in surgical settings.
Students will study topics including disinfection, cleaning and decontamination, infection prevention and control, sterilization methods, regulatory standards, safety protocols, inventory management, and professional communication skills.
Upon successful completion of the program and 400 hours of internship, students will be eligible to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam administered by the International Association of Healthcare Sterile Processing (IAHSP).
Tuition covers textbooks, background check, drug screening, certification exam fees, supplies, and internship/clinical lab experiences.
Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with instructors, peers, and clinical site employees
- Demonstrate emotional stability to allow professional interaction with instructors, peers, and clinical site employees under stressful or demanding conditions
- Demonstrate and apply standard precautions and the blood-born pathogen standard
- Apply basic principles of infection control including prevention of spreading or contracting blood borne illnesses
- Demonstrate appropriate precautions for personal protection and biohazard waste
- Demonstrate accountability in the central service technician role
- Communicate the standards and recommended practices regarding surgical attire
- Demonstrate appropriate techniques in performing general cleaning tasks
- Demonstrate appropriate use of wrapping and packaging techniques
- Perform correct assembly of instrument/procedure trays, including identification, layout, and use
- Identify the major quality assurance processes in central service processing
- Demonstrate proper sterilization techniques
- Document supplies, inventory, and storage protocols through accurate recordkeeping
- Initiate appropriate protocols for central service workload (cleaning, wrapping, sterilization, assembling carts, distribution) in a timely manner
- Demonstrate understanding of cleaning, assembly, and testing of patient care equipment commonly used in operating room
- Identify and apply HIPAA regulations
- Demonstrate proper linen folding
- Properly assemble case carts and understand the workflow for transport
