Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Certificate Program
This program prepares students to safely perform essential nursing duties under the supervision of a licensed nurse in a healthcare setting. Emphasis is placed on communication, observation, and documentation skills to support the psychological, physical, and environmental needs of patients.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to sit for the Delaware Nurse Aide Competency Exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Collaborate effectively with members of health care team.
- Demonstrate accountability inherent in the nursing assistant role.
- Identify the basic physical and emotional needs of the acute and chronically ill and the geriatric patient.
- Apply basic knowledge and skills to provide assertive care to patients/residents in health care facilities.
- Perform nursing assistant skills in a safe and therapeutic manner.
- Demonstrate CPR at the heart saver level.
- Identify abuse potentials and appropriate reporting of abuse.
- Apply basic principles of infection control.
- Identify risks and assist with emergency procedures.
- Provide a safe clean environment.
- Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills with health care professionals.
- Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with residents who are cognitively impaired and/or with mental health disorders.
- Apply basic nutrition principles relating to preparation and serving of meals.
- Identify major body systems.
- Demonstrate skills which incorporate principles of restorative care.
- Provide basic nursing care to the resident when death is imminent.
- Identify safety risks and demonstrate appropriate safety precautions.
- Understand and apply HIPA regulations.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of medical abbreviations when documenting patient care.
Prior to registering for this allied health program, an applicant must attend an and complete a placement test.
