Facilities Sanitation Technician II
Steven Houston joined the Delaware Tech team after 27 years in the quick service food industry and he found the change to be a culture shock, but in a good way. In his role as facilities sanitation technician II, Steven takes pride in making certain that students arrive to a campus that is clean and well maintained, which he says helps foster the proper environment for learning. Outside of work, he enjoys gardening and church activities. Once he retires, Steven would like to open a small engine repair shop.
Q: Why was it important for you to work at Delaware Tech?
"I wanted to have a job that allowed me to have flexibility to enjoy time with my family. I also wanted to have the opportunity to continue to encourage young people to be the best they can be! Remember, your current situation is not your final destination."
Q: What did you do before working at Delaware Tech?
"Before Delaware Tech, I spent 27 years as a supervisor at McDonald’s Corp. overseeing six stories in Salisbury (MD) and the surrounding area."
Q: Describe your first day at Delaware Tech. What was that experience like?
"My first day at the College was quite a culture shock. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and welcoming. It was different from the quick service food industry."
Q: What changes have you seen in yourself since you started working here?
"I am much more relaxed and because of this, I find myself looking for ways to help anyone who is need of assistance."
Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of the College?
"Outside of work, I enjoy gardening and church activities."
Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Delaware Tech?
"My favorite memory at Delaware Tech was experiencing my first winter break. I could not believe we had two weeks off at the holidays. All I could say was, ‘Wow!’"
Q: What’s something people may not know about you?
"People may not know that I love Motown and that I am a pastor."
Q: How do you define student success?
"From my position, it means that students come to a clean and inviting campus that is well maintained. That fosters an environment conducive to learning."
Q: What are your future goals?
"My future goals include opening a small engine repair shop whenever I decide to retire."
