Michael Broadnax
Student Affairs Program Assistant
From student to staff member, Michael Broadnax’s journey at Delaware Tech has been rooted in resilience, growth, and a passion for helping others succeed. In this Q&A, he reflects on his path to becoming a student affairs specialist, the lessons he has learned along the way, and what keeps him inspired on campus each day.
Q: Can you share your journey to becoming a staff member at Delaware Tech? When did you start and what were you doing before?
“I started working at Delaware Tech as part of a work-study while pursuing my associate degree in entrepreneurship in 2019. I worked closely with the men’s and women’s basketball teams, assisting with home games and traveling with the team for away games.
As I approached my last semester as a student, I was asked to be a student success aide for New Student Orientation and later became a student affairs specialist.
The journey to where I am now has been interesting to say the least. Before finishing my last few semesters as a student, my father was diagnosed with glioblastoma, which is a fast-moving brain tumor. He passed a few months later. I almost dropped out of school and didn’t want to finish due to how fast everything happened. However, I had long talks with my family and program advisor at the time, and they all pushed me to finish.
I can confidently say that the memory of my father—who he was as a husband, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, and father—pushes me to be the best version of me that I can be.”
Q: Describe your first day at Delaware Tech. What was that experience like?
“As a part-time student affairs specialist, my first day was a good one. I did not know what “business casual” was, so I tried to play it safe by wearing Delaware Tech clothing. Later that day, I asked my dean what I should wear, and he let me know what was acceptable.
I share the story because when I first started, I was super excited and also did not know what I was doing—I never thought I’d work in an office setting. After high school my plan was to keep working at a custom and restoration body shop until I gained enough experience to own a shop of my own.
I was walking on water my first day because getting the job was already a different wheelhouse for me, and from asking a simple question I was guided in the right direction—a pattern that I’d notice would follow me during my time here.”
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech?
“My favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech is the teamwork. Some days are easier than others, but all in all, everyone works together to better our students. I am also very appreciative of the work family I’ve built and been welcomed into, from within and outside of student affairs.”
Q: What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have you overcome them? What changes have you seen in yourself since you started working here?
“Challenges I’ve faced in my career—and in myself—have been financial. Trying to figure out how to progress in my professional career while also funding my education to better my career in the long run was difficult.
Other challenges include how I viewed myself in different seasons—whether it was thinking I wasn’t enough or that I wasn’t qualified for certain tasks or opportunities. Ultimately, everything boiled down to me having to go through each moment and feel it fully.
Not looking for a shortcut was key. Sometimes my hardest days or seasons were times when the only way through was through the fire. Even when it came to insecurities or having to look at myself in a new light, I had to go through those uncomfortable moments and feel the pain and tension of them.
If I didn’t go through the fire, then I couldn’t be purified and refined. Fire, in most cases when it comes to shaping or sculpting something, burns off the things that are holding back the final product. We always look at the finished product and see how beautiful it is, but we rarely look at the refinement process and call it beautiful. All of these things I did through my relationship with God.”
Q: Can you share a significant achievement or milestone in your professional journey?
“A significant achievement for me was when I was selected for the College’s Excellence in Service Award. That was a hard season for me personally and professionally—I felt like I was pouring out and not being refilled or appreciated. At the same time, people were speaking about me in rooms that I was not in. That taught me that, in times where you feel like no one sees you, someone is always watching and a breakthrough from a hard season is around the corner.”
Q: What are your interests or hobbies outside of the College?
“Outside of the College I enjoy listening to music, exercising, and hanging out with friends and family.”
Q: What’s something people may not know about you?
“Most people may not know that I have a lot of introverted tendencies. Before becoming a student at Delaware Tech, I was very quiet and wouldn’t talk to anyone. Over time, between my time as a student here at and different positions that I’ve been in, I have opened up and can be very lively and welcoming. I really like to engage with students when they come because as a former social introvert, I like to be for others what I wish was done for me.”
