Kathy Spencer
Academic Mental Health Resource Counselor
Kathy Spencer joined the Delaware Tech family in 2011 as the academic mental health resource counselor for the Terry Campus in Dover. Before coming to the College, she spent 19 years working at the Wellness Center for Christiana Care.
Originally, she studied criminal justice with the intention of following in her father's footsteps by pursuing a law career. However, Spencer found social work to be more fulfilling and rewarding. Throughout her career, she has worked with individuals of all ages in both academic and community settings.
As the only academic mental health resource counselor on campus, Spencer supports students during their times of need. She said many students often feel as though they don’t belong, and this is what motivates her every day.
When asked about the most rewarding aspect of her job, Spencer shared that the ability to work with students and help them discover their path is deeply meaningful. She considers it special to be a part of a student's journey as they determine where they want to go and where they want to land.
Outside of her work at Delaware Tech, Spencer runs her own clinical counseling practice, which she has maintained for over 15 years. She hopes to one day share this practice with her daughter, who is also a counselor.
Spencer's advice to those facing challenges is simple: "No man is an island. It's okay to reach out for a life raft sometimes."
