Suyog Shrestha

Computing and Information Science

For Suyog Shrestha, college has been about far more than mastering technical skills. A computing and information science student at Delaware Tech's Wilmington campus, Shrestha is preparing for a career in technology while actively contributing to campus life.

"For me, coming to college is not just about learning complex subjects," Shrestha said. "It's about adapting to a new environment, learning from the people around me, and building meaningful connections. I value growing as a whole person rather than just as a student."

When considering colleges, Shrestha was looking for an option that would allow him to pursue higher education without taking on significant financial debt, while also providing a clear path to continue his education.

"I chose Delaware Tech because of its affordability and availability," he said. "The connected degree with UD provides smooth transfer opportunities, which was the deciding factor for me."

While pursuing his education, Shrestha has already started building his career, working at Delaware Tech as an IT technician. He chose his major to align with his long-term career goals in technology and cybersecurity.

"Computing and information science covers core programming skills and logical thinking," he said. "Delaware Tech also offers a transfer pathway to a computer science degree with a concentration in cybersecurity, which made this program a strong fit for me."

In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Shrestha has taken on leadership roles across campus. He serves as secretary for the Student Government Association and vice president of fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa's Alpha Zeta Kappa chapter.

"Honestly, the growth has been exponential," he said. "Joining SGA and PTK forced me to get out of my shell. I went from someone who was shy and reserved to someone who actively seeks connections and serves students I didn't know before."

One of Shrestha's most meaningful experiences came through a Phi Theta Kappa service initiative organized by the Alpha Zeta Kappa chapter last fall.

"We organized an event called ‘Stories That Matter' where students and employees shared stories of resilience," he said. "Some of us helped students write, others served hot chocolate, and one of our officers even baked cupcakes from scratch. Seeing my team come together to make people feel heard made the day really special."

Shrestha encourages other students to lean on their support systems and take advantage of available resources.

"It's normal to struggle with class material or have setbacks," he said. "Reach out to your instructors because they genuinely want to help. And if you prefer studying with friends, group study can turn shared struggles into shared victories."

After graduation, Shrestha plans to transfer to the University of Delaware to pursue a bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in cybersecurity. He hopes to eventually move into leadership roles within the cybersecurity field.
