Biological Sciences
Alexander Loux knew that attending Â鶹ÊÓƵ would be a major life change and a completely new experience. After being homeschooled throughout his childhood and moving between several states, Loux decided to enroll at the College after learning about the SEED Plus program.
“At first, I felt pretty concerned about coming,” said Loux. “I had never interacted with teachers and fellow students before. When I first arrived at Delaware Tech, I was worried about how I should behave and what I should do. After getting to know the people at the College, I realized there are a lot of students who have nontraditional pathways that led them here.”
Loux chose to major in biological sciences because of his strong interest in food safety and quality. He soon discovered a supportive community of like-minded students when he joined the science club, which provided him with additional hands-on experience with equipment and opportunities to build his resume. Additionally, Loux is an active member of the Student Government Association (SGA), the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the Prismatic (LGBTQIA+) Club.
“SGA really helped me get out of my shell because I was very anxious coming here, and I felt very socially unaware,” said Loux. “This is probably the biggest club that I’ve been a part of, and I am proud to say that I’ve been elected to the SGA twice – first, as a member-at-large in spring 2024, and now as the current president. Most importantly, this club pushed me to interact with people and represent the student body at the College.”
The biggest challenge Loux faced was during spring 2025 when he took on a heavy course load while managing a family emergency at home. In that difficult time, the students and faculty at Delaware Tech stepped up to support him. His favorite memory while at the College was giving a speech to incoming students during the Fall 2025 New Student Orientation, where he reflected on his experience at Delaware Tech.
“The speech was to a room of like 200 people or so and was the first public speech of my life,” said Loux. “I even had my parents in the audience. Then I just started talking, and the more I talked, the easier it was.”
After Loux graduates from Delaware Tech, he plans to find a job in the biological science field while also taking part-time classes at the University of Delaware toward a degree in biology.
“My biggest advice for students is not to be afraid to talk to your instructors,” said Loux. “They were students once, just like you. Some of them are still students now. If you ever feel stressed about class or nervous and think the teacher might think less of you, they won’t.”
