Meet the April Athlete Spotlight Students
April 25, 2023
Delaware Tech student-athletes must excel on and off the field as representatives of the College. Throughout the season on the Delaware Tech Athletics Instagram account, one student-athlete is regularly honored for their overall athletic performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, and commitment to education.
Here are Athlete Spotlight students this month:
Blake Gipko
Blake Gipko is a first-year member of the men's lacrosse team, an exercise science major, and a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School. Gipko has been one of the team's primary offensive threats, scoring 15 goals to lead the team in scoring. "I feel that I bring a positive attitude to the team each game," Gipko said. "I try to lead by example and be the type of teammate that I would like to play with. What I love about playing midfield so much is that I am able to do everything and go anywhere on the field. I like the fact that as a midfielder I can play a role in defense, clearing the ball, and scoring goals. This helps me to maximize my contribution to the team in every game."
Ryan McCrary
Ryan McCrary is a second-year member of the men's lacrosse team, a general studies major, and a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. McCrary has been with the program for three seasons due to one season occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has been a defensive stalwart for the program from day one. He has also started almost every game he has played for Delaware Tech during that time. "Everyone brings their own positives to the team," McCrary said. "I am someone who brings great work-ethic and determination to each and every game and practice. Playing defense makes players have to constantly communicate and talk to one another."
Jada Courtney
Jada Courtney is a second-year member of the softball team, a general studies major, and a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School. Courtney is actually in her third season due to her first year falling during the COVID-19 pandemic, and she has made her final season her best yet. She was an all-region player in 2022, and since then has improved her game in every area - from hitting to fielding. As of April 24, Courtney has 34 hits, five home runs, and 28 RBI while batting .386. Off the field, she has also become a solid student in the classroom and she plans to apply to the diagnostic medical sonography program in the fall. "Jada has been a steady player over three seasons and is a very good first baseman," Head Coach Guy Wilkins said. "Over the last two years she worked in the offseason and got a little stronger and improved her batting average while adding power to her hits. We are looking for good things from her in this important stretch run of our season."
Bryce Wells
Bryce Wells is a second-year member of the men's lacrosse team, a general studies major, and a graduate of Milford High School. Wells split time at face-off during his freshman season and lead the nation in face-off percentage. This year, Wells has been the team's primary face-off specialist and finished with a 77-114 record. He also had the opportunity to play more in the midfield, and scored five goals, had five assists, and picked up 38 ground balls. "I feel like I bring a positive attitude to the team during each game," Wells said. "I like to make sure my guys are locked in before the game starts and make sure to keep their heads-up so we can stay focused and put ourselves into better positions to score and win. Face-off is one of the most important positions in the game besides goalie. I get to be able to give my team possessions and fast breaks that can lead into scoring opportunities."
