Walls Hits Her Way into Delaware Tech History

March 29, 2023

As an all-conference and all-state soccer player for all four years of high school, Logan Walls was ready to continue playing at the college level after graduation.

But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she decided it was more important to be close to home and her family. So, she changed her plans, enrolled at Â鶹ÊÓƵ instead, and decided to pursue her “second” sport, softball.

“It was honestly the greatest decision I’ve ever made,” Walls said. “I’ve been able to stay close to my family and friends, and I’ve gotten close with everyone on the team over the years.”

There’s no way to know what level of success Walls could have achieved if she had continued playing soccer. But she has been making history during her time with the Delaware Tech softball team. Walls has been a lock-down second baseman, batted leadoff or second in the order, made first team all-region during her first two years, and was an integral part of the team winning back-to-back region and district championships.

On March 26, Walls added one more accomplishment when she became just the second player in at least the past 12 seasons to surpass 100 career hits. While she technically had three seasons to reach this achievement, due to her first season coinciding with the start of the pandemic, Walls only took 74 games to break 100.

“I wasn’t keeping track, so when coach said ‘congratulations,’ I had no idea,” Walls said. “After the game everyone told me I had my 100th hit. It feels like a great accomplishment, especially since I never thought I’d even be here at Delaware Tech.”

Walls practices hard throughout the year to perfect her swing and keep herself in top shape. She is a patient batter, drawing walks during her career, and has even hit a home run. The speed that propelled her on the soccer fields also helps her when playing softball. She routinely beats throws to first base, and once she is on base, she is an aggressive base runner.

"Logan's drive and her work ethic is second to none," Head Coach Guy Wilkins said. "She’s just a great athlete who gets better every game. She’s a great student in the classroom, and on the field she’s a true competitor who wants the ball hit to her and wants to be in the situation where she's the one who needs to get on base."

As long as she maintains the approach that got her this far, there’s little doubt Walls can continue to add to her growing list of accomplishments, push her stats even higher, and help lead Delaware Tech to an unprecedented third straight trip to the national tournament.

“Softball is really mental,” Walls said. “If you get down on yourself you won’t do well, you have got to stay positive and everything should work out and usually does.”
