TRIO - Upward Bound Math & Science Student Awarded $24,000 Scholarship
January 13, 2025
Breanna Vicente Huinac, a high school junior enrolled in Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s TRIO - Upward Bound Math & Science program, has been named the recipient of the Donald and Nancy Edwards Scholarship. The scholarship, awarded through the Delaware Community Foundation, provides $24,000 (at $6,000 per year) that can be used at any accredited college for any major.
Huinac, who participates in Upward Bound on the College’s Jack F. Owens Campus in Georgetown, attends Laurel Senior High School and was on her way to the school cafeteria for lunch when she learned she had received the scholarship.
“I was overjoyed and overwhelmed with emotion,” she said. “I tried to hold my composure in the hall to keep myself from jumping with happiness, and I immediately called my mother. When I got home, I told my family and never felt so proud of myself. I am currently still in awe and so proud to be awarded this scholarship.”
Receiving the Edwards scholarship may be the highlight of Huinac’s time in Upward Bound Math & Science, a no-cost program designed to motivate and prepare students for the successful pursuit of a college education that leads to careers in the field of math and science, but it isn’t the lone memorable experience.
“I have had many fun memories during my time at Upward Bound, but our three-day trip to New York was an unforgettable experience,” said Huinac, who shared that the trip included visits to Princeton University and Columbia University, the experience of attending a Broadway show (her first!), and seeing the Statue of Liberty. “I will never forget the fun memories I created with my friends, and the happiness I felt experiencing those amazing moments.”
Cultural and educational trips and activities are part of the Upward Bound Math & Science program, which also provides participating students with academic support and a six-week summer program that provides academic enrichment, hands-on experiences in math, technology, and science, job-shadowing and career exploration, campus tours, trips, and college-centered activities.
Huinac found out about Upward Bound Math & Science from a fellow student enrolled in the program.
“She expressed her love for the program and gave me an application to fill out,” said Huinac. “I would soon understand her love for Upward Bound, since they have taught me knowledge and ways to succeed in life. I would encourage any high school student to join our Upward Bound Math and Science family.”
Huinac, whose dream job is to work in sports marketing, is a member of the National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America and also serves as the social media manager for both organizations at her high school.
“These activities at school have inspired my passion for marketing and continued my education in the marketing field,” she said. “The Don and Nancy Edwards Scholarship will not only support my education but also develop my marketing skills. The scholarship will help me pursue my passion without the stress of tuition costs, and it brings me one step closer to my goal of making a positive impact in the world.”
According to the Delaware Community Foundation, that is the reason the Edwards scholarship, which assists high school juniors in the Upward Bound program in Delaware, was established.
"The Edwards were extremely generous, caring people who lived in Wilmington and enjoyed helping Upward Bound students reach their potential," said Kelly Sheridan, the foundation’s grant and scholarship coordinator. "They saw great value in the Upward Bound program and helping these students brought them great joy and satisfaction."
