Schlabach Headed to Maryville College to Play Baseball

July 26, 2022

After two successful years as a member of Â鶹ÊÓƵ's baseball team, pitcher Brandon Schlabach is transferring to Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. to join the Maryville Scots baseball team and major in business management.

"I've always wanted to go away for college, and I wanted to go a little further south," Schlabach said. "Once I visited, I fell in love with the campus almost immediately. The way the coach talked about his plans for the team in the coming years perfectly lined up with what I was looking for and everything just seemed to fall into place and click."

Schlabach graduated from Delmarva Christian High School in 2019 and joined the Delaware Tech pitching staff for the 2020 season while majoring in general business. He graduated with his associate degree this past spring.

"As I started to think about college and where I wanted to play, I always considered Delaware Tech but always as a backup option," Schlabach said. "Once I got into my senior year it started to click that Delaware Tech would be my best option for a number of reasons. I knew it would give me the best chance to play a lot and I knew it would be really good for my development, and I knew it would help me get to the level I was hoping to get to by the time I was finished."

Schlabach improved each year he was at Delaware Tech. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 season after Delaware Tech started 11-3. Schlabach had three appearances in those 14 games, pitching seven innings with an ERA of 3.86. The team had a rough 2021 season, finishing 16-22 and Schlabach pitched 37 innings in 13 appearances. Delaware Tech rebounded in 2022, finishing with a 32-10 record. Schlabach transitioned to more of a relief role and in 16 appearances picked up four saves, recorded 34 strikeouts, and finished with a 4.75 ERA.

"We had some ups and downs, but overall it was a great experience and I couldn't have asked for anything more," Schlabach said. "Between the team and the coaching I received it was a lot of fun and I feel really good about my time at Delaware Tech."

Schlabach has been a pitcher since he was 9 years old, but he didn't start pitching exclusively until he came to Delaware Tech.

"I just love pitching," Schlabach said. "I was always a better pitcher than a hitter anyways.

"When I was growing up and watching MLB, I always found pitching fascinating and it looked a lot of fun to me. So, I'd always go out in the backyard and practice pitching with my dad even before I was allowed to start pitching."

As he prepares to join a new pitching staff, Schlabach is playing in the Eastern Shore League out of Salisbury, Md. He's working on gaining more command of his pitches, his off-speed balls, and trying to gain more muscle mass

"I'm mainly just looking to play, contribute, and help the team win whether it means I'm coming out of the bullpen or starting," Schlabach said. "I want to win a lot of ball games, play my heart out with my team, and have a lot of fun while doing it."
