For just the second time in the past 12 seasons, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ baseball team has had a player surpass 100 hits.

Sophomore Matt Rodriguez reached this milestone on March 12 in the first game of a doubleheader against Allegany College of Maryland. Rodriguez got four hits in the game to reach a total of 101 for his Delaware Tech career.

"It's a great achievement," Head Coach Stu Madden said. "It shows what consistent hard work can help you accomplish."

While Rodriguez is technically in his third season at Delaware Tech, due to his first season falling during the COVID-19 pandemic, he accomplished the 100 hits in 94 total games. Previously, Kyle Lux finished with 111 hits over 80 games from 2017-2018. As of March 20, Rodriguez has 107 hits and is just 18 RBI away from 100 career RBI.

"I never really thought I would get to 100 hits when I joined the program," Rodriguez said. "Once I saw it was a possibility it definitely became a goal of mine. It's a great goal to achieve since not many have accomplished it.'

Rodriguez credited his approach at the plate when he has two strikes with a lot of his hitting success.

"Two strikes is just another count to me," Rodriguez said. "I don't worry about striking out, and I just focus on the ball coming at me."

From year one to year two, Rodriguez became the team's dominant hitter. He was honorable mention for the all-region team the first year and first team all-region his second year. Rodriguez was also named the team's most valuable player MVP after last season.

"I compete against myself," Rodriguez said. "I want to put up better numbers than I did the season before or even the game before."

Rodriguez will graduate in May with a degree in management and has yet not committed to another college to continue his baseball career. But no matter where he goes next, he has left his mark on the Delaware Tech baseball program, and his name will forever be in the record books.

"Matt has been a huge part of our program's success the past few years," Madden said. "He has become a leader and been a great example for younger players on how to prepare and work to get better.

"Matt has gotten himself into the best shape of his life physically, and went from an average student to having over a 3.0 GPA. It has been a pleasure coaching Matt these past three years, and I wish him all the best with his future endeavors."
