Meet the February Athlete-Spotlight Students
February 28, 2022
Delaware Tech offers a variety of sports available to students at all campuses, and is proud of the student-athletes who represent the College. Athlete Spotlight includes academic performance, athletic performance, sportsmanship, and service in the community. It is a cumulative honor that focuses on the student-athlete rather than the athlete only. Each week the student-athlete is honored on the Delaware Tech Athletics Instagram account.
Rashaan Butler
Rashaan Butler is a second-year member of the men's basketball team, a human services major, and a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. Butler finished the first half of the season on fire, averaging nearly 22 points per game while shooting a sensational 62 percent. "Rashaan is one of the most unnoticed superstars at the college level," Head Coach Richard Rago said. "He is an undersized big man and built like a guard, and every game he takes it to the opposing team's bigs and scores at the basket. His play has led us to the top spot in our conference and in contention for a playoff spot. Rashaan is the quiet heart and soul of our team."
Sierra Smith
Sierra Smith is a member of the women’s basketball team, a general studies major, and a graduate of Woodbridge High School. Smith finished the season 10th in the nation and 2nd in the region in assists per game with 5.6. She has also recently picked up her scoring, averaging almost 10 points per game in the team’s last six games. “Sierra is a vital part of our success,” Head Coach Megan Fox said. “She has progressively gotten better throughout the season. She has started to score in double figures and is demonstrating leadership skills. She is extremely coachable and a team player.”
Matt Rodriguez
Matt Rodriguez is a member of the baseball team, a management major, and a graduate of Delmar High School. Rodriguez has started the season on fire, batting .542 with four home runs and 12 RBI through 8 games. "Matt has started off the season extremely well," Head Coach Stu Madden said. "He worked very hard in the off-season to get stronger and improve his game. After being named all-region last year, I expect him to have an even better season this year. Matt is one of our leaders and will be a big part of our success this season."
