Governor John Carney Receives Paul K. Weatherly Award

Gov. John C. Carney, Jr., a longtime supporter of 麻豆视频, received the Paul K. Weatherly Award in May 2024. Named after the College’s first president, the Weatherly Award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the College and who best exemplify the ideals of the community college spirit.

“The College is extremely grateful to Governor Carney for his support and commitment to Delaware Tech and our mission,” said Dr. Mark T. Brainard, Delaware Tech president. “Without his support, the College would not have been able to create new programs that support Delaware’s economy, help our students connect with jobs, and make significant investments resulting in state-of-the-art classrooms and labs for our students.”

Since taking office over seven years ago, Gov. Carney has shown support for Delaware Tech students in a variety of ways. In 2019, he signed Senate Substitute 2 for Senate Bill 50, legislation that expressed intent for the state to appropriate at least $50 million dollars over five years to Delaware Tech to address longstanding deferred maintenance collegewide. He also supported the College’s efforts to approve Delaware Tech for another phase of funding that includes at least $50 million dollars for deferred maintenance for the next five years.

“This legislation, and the Carney Administration’s support, has preserved the community college as we know it for the next generation of Delawareans,” Dr. Brainard said.

In addition, Gov. Carney’s salary policies improved Delaware Tech’s faculty competitiveness among public school districts and focused on helping those at the lowest end of the state pay scale. As a result, some College employees have received as much as a 16 percent pay increase over two years. The College has also been able to fully fund SEED scholarships each year with an overall increase of 150 percent since the governor took office.

“During Governor Carney’s tenure, the capital and operating investments in Delaware Tech have been unprecedented,” said Nancy Shevock, chairman of the College’s Board of Trustees. “A tireless advocate for the College, Governor Carney has recognized the significant role we play in educating our state’s workforce, and he has invested in the College and provided the resources we need to support our students.”
