Delaware Tech won the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 19 men’s lacrosse championship with a 13-12 victory over Sussex County Community College (New Jersey) on April 24 at the DE Turf Sports Complex.
Gabe Smith paced Delaware Tech’s offense with nine goals, including the game winner with only seconds left in regulation, with Max Gray, Cameron Hellens, Dominic Hippler, and Shane Sylvester each scoring once.
Sylvester also tallied five assists, followed by three from Ethan Parker and one each from Tyree Heath and Kendric Jones. Goalie Malaki Balentine recorded 15 saves.
"The entire coaching staff is incredibly proud of the team's resilience and determination this season, as well as the region title game,” said Head Coach Dan Yearick. “Although things didn't go as planned, the team was able to make the necessary adjustments and ultimately come out on top. I have never been a part of a team that is as close-knit as this one, and that camaraderie really showed in the fourth quarter.
“These young men are not just amazing athletes, but also exceptional students, friends, brothers, and sons. It is a true blessing to share the sideline with them, and I know that all of the coaches feel the same way. We’re just getting warmed up.”
Delaware Tech moves on to the North Atlantic District Tournament being hosted by Nassau Community College in Uniondale, New York. Delaware Tech will face College of DuPage in the second semifinal on Friday, April 26 at 4 p.m. The tournament opens with Sussex County Community College playing Nassau at 1 p.m. Semifinal winners will play Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
