Delaware Tech Hosts 2025 New Castle County Science Fair at Stanton Campus
March 26, 2025
Â鶹ÊÓƵ again hosted the annual New Castle County Science Fair, which drew 115 students in grades 6-12 to share their individual and group projects for judging at the Stanton Campus.
This year’s event ran from March 11 to March 13, and the participating students represented over 20 different public and private schools in New Castle County.
“The Science Fair encourages students to continue their interest in science,” said Tracy McMillan, program manager for workforce development and community education at the Delaware Tech Stanton Campus. “We want these students to challenge what they see, what they do, what they experience daily in their classes, and how they see the world. The overall goal is to develop a lifelong level of learning that will lead to a career.”
This year, students submitted 84 individual and 20 group projects that covered a wide variety of topics such as behavioral and social science, botany, computer science, chemistry, engineering, microbiology, physics, and zoology, just to list a few.
A select group of volunteer judges evaluated the projects and questioned students about their scientific conclusions. Local businesses throughout the state invest in these future STEM leaders by providing experienced judges and financial sponsorships.
“We love it when the same students come back each year and expand on their projects,” said Patty Murray, a volunteer judge representing the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. “The best thing for us to see is when students use the scientific method and then build upon and expand their research the following year.”
An award ceremony was held on March 13 to celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s participants. Winners of the New Castle County Science Fair will advance to the Delaware Valley Science Fair, where they will compete with other students from the Tri-State Area for a chance to present at the International Science and Engineering Fair in May.
“Science fairs are a great opportunity for us students to express our work and our passion,” said Xiaomiao Hu, a student participant from the Charter School of Wilmington. “I look around and see lots of future innovations. By being here, we are able to show off what we have done, be acknowledged, and be innovative.”
Delaware Tech extends a special thank you to the primary sponsors of this year’s event: Agilent Technologies, Inc., CRODA, Inc., Fujifilm Imaging Colorants, Inc., Delaware City Refinery Company, Incyte, Energize Delaware, Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership, Delaware Biotechnology Institute, M. Davis and Sons, Inc., New Castle Conservation District, and Vandermark and Lynch, Inc. Additionally, In-kind Donation Sponsors included Herr’s and the Kenny Family Foundation.
In total, the New Castle County Science Fair raised $12,750, all of which will be used to support monetary awards for the Science Fair winners and event operations.
