Commercial Transportation Program Increases Its Support of Wreaths Across America

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s commercial transportation program not only continued its support of Wreaths Across America in December, it increased the number of wreaths it delivered across Delaware and Maryland that were placed on grave sites of military members.

Because the commercial transportation program has expanded into Middletown from its original location in Georgetown, the College was able to send two trucks to Maine to pick up wreaths for the annual event.

“Last year we brought back about 5,100 wreaths,” said Bryan Ward, department chair of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) program. “This year we had the capacity to bring back twice that number. We weren’t tasked with quite that many but it allows us to provide that service.”

Ward, fellow instructor Lauren Burleson, and four students, three from Georgetown and one from Middletown, made the 1,400-mile roundtrip to Maine Dec. 6-8.

“With two trucks, every student had the opportunity to team drive,” said Ward. “It was a unique experience for them.

“There were some unexpected delays in waiting, but that’s what trucking is all about – you just never can tell what hurdles you’ll have to deal with. It was a snapshot of a real-world mission in the industry, so I think it was really valuable to them.”

Instructors and students also made local deliveries of the wreaths to locations in Harrington, Seaford, Blades, Bear, and Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, as well as in Denton, Salisbury, and Greensboro in Maryland.

“I think it’s crucial we continue to support this initiative,” said Ward. “It’s important to Delaware Tech because it builds teamwork with the students who are able to go, but more importantly, it provides a connection with the local community. It allows family members of fallen soldiers and veterans an opportunity to recognize them in a special way.”

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine wreath maker Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization’s yearlong mission - Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, Teach the next generation the value of freedom - is carried out, in part, each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at thousands of participating locations in all 50 states and beyond.
