All Delaware Tech Cross Country Runners Earn All-Region Status, Qualify for National Meet
October 31, 2022
All of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s men’s and women’s cross country runners earned NJCAA Region 19 Division I All-Region honors and qualified for the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships after their performances at the 2022 NJCAA Region 19 Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29 at White Clay Creek State Park.
“Our Delaware Tech team achieved their goal of earning individual all-region honors and qualifying for the national championship meet in Tallahassee, Florida,” Head Coach Mike O’Brian said. “But this doesn't just happen overnight – the team committed to this goal weeks prior, accomplishing the wholistic training regimen both on and off the course, committing to their collective goal of performing at their highest level.”
Delaware Tech sophomores Kaitlyn Cavallucci and Joe Volk led their respective teams as individual NJCAA Region 19 Division I champions. Cavallucci set a new school course record in the women’s 5k with a time of 21:15, making her just the second-ever Delaware Tech women’s individual region champion.
“I just had great motivation from my parents, my team, and my coaches and that helps make me run fast,” Cavallucci said. “My goal entering this season was to make nationals and I’ve accomplished that goal, so I’m really proud of how I did today.
“At nationals I just want to have a good time, run my best, and keep up the positive motivation.”
Meanwhile, Volk continued his streak of leading Delaware Tech’s men’s team by winning the men’s 8k race in a time of 30:56. Volk has finished first for Delaware Tech in every men’s race since he joined the program in 2021.
“Today felt electric,” Volk said. “I felt excited, a little nervous, but I kept my eye on the prize. Being a region champion feels really good.
“My goal this season was to run my fastest 8k, which I did earlier this season. Going into nationals I’m hoping I can get a new personal record because I’ve heard it’s a flat course.”
Kat Jiminez also earned all-region honors in the women’s race with a 5k time of 26:54. Joining Volk on the men’s side were DeAndre Snipes-Brown with an 8k time of 33:38, Jacob Gordon (34:41), Reese Lohman (34:44), Colby Morris (38:26), and Joshua Alvares-Ramos (38:58). Gordon earned all-region honors in 2021 as well.
“I’ve used the word ‘machine’ to describe Kaitlyn and the same can be said to articulate Joe,” O’Brian said. “They both know what their goals are, lock in, and execute what needs to be done to achieve that goal with very little guidance from their coaching staff. They're very in-tune with just what it takes for them to be successful and that dedication and discipline showed on the course.”
The runners will now set their sights on the national meet on November 12.
“The team has put their heart and soul into the season to this point,” O’Brian said. “The goal for the next two weeks leading up to nationals is to keep the gas pedal down in the way of motivation and focus, but take a relaxed approach to our workouts.”
