2026 Law Enforcement Option Program Kicks Off

January 30, 2026

Delaware Tech's Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Option (LEO) program kicked off on Jan. 23 at the Terry Campus in Dover with a welcome from the Delaware State Police superintendent and the College president.

"Thank you very much for pursuing this career, and in particular, participating in a program that's had a long-standing and very important partnership with the Delaware State Police," said President Mark T. Brainard, a graduate of Delaware Tech's criminal justice program.

The Law Enforcement Practicum is an eight-credit-hour course taught by Delaware Tech instructors with the help of guest speakers from various law enforcement agencies. Dubbed a "quasi-police academy," the program teaches students the customs and procedures of police academy training to help them quickly assimilate to such training once they complete the program. Graduates of the LEO program have gone on to complete police academies for multiple local and state law enforcement agencies in Delaware, as well as surrounding states.

This year's LEO cadets were reminded of the importance of their chosen career when Brainard told them Gov. Matt Meyer emphasized the critical impact of Delaware's law enforcement agencies during his State of the State address in January.

Col. William Crotty, superintendent of the Delaware State Police, asked the six cadets why they chose the program. They told him they want to help others and serve their community. He assured them that the LEO program would provide the skills they will need to succeed on the job.

"The LEO program is excellent because you will find your purpose," he said. "You have to prepare before you can perform."
